Oh wow. It’s another five more days to Chinese New Year! It’s also spring time means you will see loads of floral and colorful makeup products 🙂
I did the first ever “Get Ready With Me” blog post with Mary Kay At Play™ new makeup range just this early January. As I said before, most Get Ready With Me from the internet is all Youtube video and you know I don’t vlog so I guess I broke the record by doing a blog post 😀 . So, following the first blog post on Mary Kay At Play™ latest makeup line, today I’m going to review two more products from the new line which is the Mary Kay At Play™ “On The Horizon” Baked Eye Trio and “Hot Tamale” Jelly Lip Gloss.
Mary Kay At Play™ “On The Horizon” Baked Eye Trio (RM40 / 2g)
As you already know, I’m a fan of colorful eyeshadow. Not quite a neutral-do girl and this “On The Horizon” Baked Eye Trio is my first neutral eyeshadow palette. I’m not kidding 😛 . Of all three palette that I received from Mary Kay, I cringed at this one. Well I cringe at every neutral palette that I get, not just this. I wanted to show you how great this baked eye trio palette is and I wouldn’t want to go all smokey yet with “Tuxedo” palette so I’ve decided to get my hands on this “On The Horizon” instead.
The more I look at it the more I like love it. At first I couldn’t figure out what is the plum shade doing there and how am I suppose to incorporate into my neutral look but then everything seems to fall into places after I swatch the eyeshadow. On the pan itself the shades are gorgeous in my opinion. I know those of you who are into neutral will be expecting all brown, earthy tone and you’ll probably cringe at this one. The more I look at it, the more I feel that the shade coordination is really ME.
You know what I like the most in this palette? The shade on the middle. Deep down inside me I’m still into shimmering eyeshadow haha. But not just that. The color is suitable to be highlighter, inner corner shade, tear duct highlighter shade, transition shade for blending and so much more.
Now, the brown. I’m not a neutral shade girl but heck this brown is beautiful! It is a dark brown with a mauve sheen. I like that the color payoff is not flat. It definitely have a definition to it. I don’t know how else to describe the shade. Trust me, it’s not just another dark brown 😀
Ahhh the plum shade. A shade that probably raise everyone’s eyebrow. Just like the brown, this plum shade also has a definition to it. I’ve never seen this plum shade before. It’s not too reddish, not too berry-like. It is also as gorgeous as the other two. This shade is no doubt the trickiest of all. Too much of this will give you the swollen eye look. But how to incorporate this shade into everyday look? Wait I’ll show you how I do it.
This is probably the palette I like the most among Ocean View and Tuxedo 😀
For the past 2 – 3 weeks I’ve been using just this Mary Kay At Play™ “On The Horizon” Baked Eye Trio palette. No other palette. It’s also because of this palette I’ve totally changed how I apply my eyeshadow. I don’t know about you but I change my method all the time. This current method by far works the best for me and on my wider, longer eye shape. For some reason I find it easier to blend and I get that perfect shape of eye makeup that I want.
(1) Start by applying eye primer and then apply the lightest shade of all onto entire eyelid.
(2) Take a blending brush (I’m using Sigma E25 Blending Brush), run the tip of your brush on the brown shade and apply in a circular movement lightly on the outer V of your eye. Take the circular movement up along the socket line. This is important as you want some color still visible on the socket line after blending. I do not apply like a wiper movement because the line would be harsh and it doesn’t look natural even after blending. Why circular movement you ask? I find the result is softer and natural. Sometime I don’t even need to blend out the harsh line because the circular movement application already soften the line for me.
(3) Take a blending brush (I’m using Sigma E45 Small Tapered Blending Brush) and blend out any harsh line. You can also use a light matte brown as transition color with this step. Apply a highlighter shade below the brow bone.
(4) Here’s where the plum shade goes to. Take a small crease brush (flat eyeshadow brush will do), dip lightly onto the plum shade on the palette and lightly connect the line from the top to tear duct. I’m applying more than usual so that you can see the shade clearly 🙂 . The rest of the step is pretty much up to you. I usually curl my lashes, draw eyeliner, apply mascara, apply the brown on the lower lash up until the middle, apply the lightest shade on the inner corner of my eye to highlight and lastly apply mascara on the lower lashes.
Here’s the result! 😀
I must say, the color payoff is superb and soft. There’s fallout on the palette when I dip my brush but surprisingly there’s no fallout on my face. The quality is superb!
Mary Kay At Play™ “Hot Tamale” Jelly Lip Gloss (RM30 / 9.5ml)
Not only I’m not a fan of neutral eyeshadow but I’m also not a fan of lip gloss. I just don’t like the stickiness of lip gloss and how my long hair would be sticking all over my lips. I wouldn’t really treat this Mary Kay At Play™ “Hot Tamale” Jelly Lip Gloss as a typical lip gloss mainly because this is more of a tinted lip balm to me probably due to the “jelly” consistency in it. I don’t find this a bad thing at all because even people like me who is not into lip gloss can now apply a lip gloss that feels like a tinted lip balm 😀
I received three shades as well, Berry Me which I’ve reviewed earlier at this link and Teddy Bare which is a neutral shade. This Hot Tamale looks like a hot chili red from the tube. I thought this will goes well with the neutral plum eye-do 😉
Mary Kay’s Jelly Lip Gloss are ultra shiny (no kidding) and applying it doesn’t take much effort. It’s so easy and the lip gloss just glides on the lips smoothly. The color payoff is quite sheer though but you can definitely build up the color depending on your preference. I like that this doesn’t comes with a doe-foot applicator or a sponge tip. I still find slanted plastic tip is the best applicator for lip gloss especially for lip gloss as smooth as this.
I don’t find this Jelly Lip Gloss as sticky as other lip gloss in the market. But it’s a bit tacky after removing it. As I said before, this lip gloss definitely need a proper removal using dedicated remover. It also doesn’t leave a white line on the inner of my lips, which I appreciate very much 😀
As red as it seems on the tube and on the back of my hand, surprisingly this Hot Tamale appear quite natural on my lips. If you like intense red look, just apply more. I prefer a simpler lip-do whenever I have this eye look on.
I would expect some scent in this lip gloss and there’s none. It’s wonderful when lip gloss is scentless otherwise I’ll definitely feel nauseas.
Hope you like this neutral-plum eye look and a little snippet on my current eyeshadow application routine. You can switch up the brown and the plum shade too but make sure you be light handed and blend the plum shade properly otherwise you’ll end up looking as if someone punch you on the eye lol.

Fiona, you look sweet~
Thanks Eileen 😀
Oh wow, I have not seen Mary Kay in a while and it looks like they have refreshed their packaging and it now looks young and fun. I like what you’ve done with the eyeshadows and lipgloss. Very pretty 🙂
Oh yes. This is their fun range. It’s quite affordable too. I’m happy to hear you like what I did with the products 😉
Thank you for the tutorial. I thought wiper movement is better all this while. You are right about blending. It leaves a harsh line with wiper motion. I will try this method instead^^
Next is Tuxedo lolz
I used to do wiper motion too. My latest circular motion is to soften the edges so blending thereafter is not even necessary actually 🙂
Tuxedo ar? Should be 😛
I like this new application method. You are right. The effect is more soft, which makes blending so much easier. Mary Kay new line surprised me. The quality seems good.
Yes, it doesn’t leave any obvious harsh line so I blend lesser 😉 . This At Play line is actually not bad. The baked eye shadow is really good and pigmented. They sent me a translucent loose powder sample as well. It controls the oil on my face superbly too.
