Burt's Bees Review: Skin Care Skin Care - Lips

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tin: When anger turns to hate before turning into love. This is by far one of the best lip balm I’ve used!

A few years ago I bought a copy of Marie Claire April 2011 as it comes with a tube of Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm. I have heard so much rave on the lip balm so I bought it. Maybe the tube I had had gone bad or whatsoever because it taste awful and I totally dislike the dry texture. I threw that away and never went back to Burt’s Bees for their highly raved lip balm. Earlier this year, I needed a new lip balm for night time so I went to Sephora to look for one and decided to give Burt’s Bees a second chance. I bought Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tin.

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm comes in two type of packaging, the normal tube or the one in a small metal tin. My room is quite hot in the mid day and most lip balm I had melted with such heat circulating in the room. I figure I would like the one that comes in a small tin. Plus it’s cute so why not 😀

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm is the original lip balm that’s been around since 1991. This small tin contain 8.5g of product while the tube only contain 4.25g of product. Price wise, it’s the same. I bought the tin version for RM22 while the tube version cost RM22 as well. RM22 may sound like a hefty price to pay for just a lip balm comparing to drugstore brand that only cost slightly over RM10 for a 4.5g, isn’t it?

Don’t let the small petite tin trick you into thinking it’s a small little pot and you’ll finish it in no time. It’s not. What I like about Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tin is that the product is filled to the brim. I’m using this very generously every night and I’m not even 1/4 down the tin yet!

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Inside
What I hate the most is also the tin. When the lid closes down, it is complete airtight. I fought with this bugger every single night. Some night I feel like throwing it away because the lid is just a pain to open. Every night is like a mission impossible night to me. There is nothing on the tin for me to grip onto and let’s not forget it’s so freaking small!! 50% of the time I managed to open the tin up with the help of my pyjamas and fingers tucked in it while wiggling the lid up. 50% of the time it just doesn’t open up. Nowadays I just don’t bother to close the lid all the way down. I just push the lid down on one side and go to sleep 😀

Another thing that you need to know about this Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Tin. When the product is new, you barely can get the product onto your fingers no matter how hard and long you swirl your fingers on. The texture is as solid as a wax. When I said solid I REALLY DO MEAN SOLID. I gave up doing this finger swirling thing after two nights and just scrape the product off with fingernail. Surprisingly the product IS STILL AS SOLID AS NEW even after a few months. So yes, swirling still doesn’t work.

Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm Application
My recommended method? Scrapping with fingernail. Not only it gets the product out, I also save time. It may be solid on the tin but once you start applying onto your lips, the product melts like a butter and goes on smoothly. It contain Peppermint Oil that gives the lips a minty, refreshing tingle.

Because of the buttery smooth consistency upon application, I applied the lip balm sparingly for the past few months. I like it at first but then I notice that I still woke up with chapped and dry lips. This went on for a few months and I didn’t know why it is so even though it feels oily on my lips before I doze off. Until two weeks ago I finally knew why. I was so pissed at this lip balm that it doesn’t give me a bit of moisturizing effect so I scrape more lip balm off the tin one night and applied a very thick layer on my lips. You know what? I woke up with soft and smooth lips! I thought it’s only one night thing so I tried again and again until this very day. Apparently I’ve been using this the wrong way all these while. It seems like sparingly or reasonable amount doesn’t do the trick for me. Now I love this lip balm more 😀

Another important note that I found out later after I increased the amount of lip balm used on my lips. At the beginning when I brush my teeth I feel that my toothbrush holder feels tacky and that tackiness is rather irking as it’s neither sticky or slippery. It’s like a non-slip tackiness residue on the toothbrush. It doesn’t take me long to figure out that it was my lip balm that causes all the tackiness. So what I do is to take a tissue paper and wipe off the excess lip balm on my lips as soon as I woke up. As a result, soft and smooth pouty lips!

Not in a thousand years I would expect so many challenges with a lip balm. This product not only challenge my patience but it challenges my patience numerous times and yet I stood by it hoping it will stop disappointing me and it did. I couldn’t understand why it is not moisturizing enough when used sparingly but works like a charm when I used a big dollop. Whatever reason it is I’m just glad that this is by far one of the best lip balm I’ve used so far.

  • When hate turns to love^^ Thanks for the tip Fiona! I still prefer lip balm in a tube. It is more convenient to apply without dirtying the finger hehe^^

    • I have lots of love hate product 😛
I think it’s quite normal to prefer tube lip balm than something in a tin like this. I didn’t want my lip balm to melt so I opt for this instead. I’m using it before bed so it’s alright to dirty the finger 🙂

  • I have only one lip balm in tin which is from Smith Rosebud. I really love the way you tell about this lip balm, very useful info for me when i get this later 🙂 anything in jars, tubs and tin casing will attract my attention the most XD

    • Oh yes I remember Smith Rosebud from your Luxola haul. I’ve seen that at Sephora checkout section as well. Was tempted to buy but then again I have to finish what I have on hand. I think that colorless lip balm that comes in a tin is much more forgiving that lip gloss or tinted lip balm. At least it doesn’t stain the finger heheeee

  • I love the tube stick one. I will say its the best lipbalm and i already used finished 2 tubes. I think tube one is better caus i don’t need use finger to apply on lip

    • I agree too. Unfortunately lip balm in a tube will melt in my room. I still have 3 more tube lip balm in my bag. It’s more convenient to apply outside 😀 . I was gifted a tube lip balm version of Burt’s Bees a few months ago 😀 . Trying hard to use up the others first before I open that one.

  • Sounds like you have a VERY complicated relationship with this lip balm, lol! They want you to use a lot so that you will repurchase, ngehehehe 😛
As for me, nothing will ever replace Jack Black lip balm T__T I dunno why MY and SG Sephora don’t stock it anymore.

    • I know right. The story of my life lol. Oh yeahhhhh….scrape more so it finishes more quickly lol. Jack Black? Sounds like liquor brand hehe. It used to be in Sephora? But where do you buy it now that it’s not in Sephora?

      • It’s actually a men’s brand but their lip balm is super awesome (and raved by a lot of bloggers). Got nowhere to buy it now except online. >_< I'm trying to use up my lip balm first. Maybe buy as Christmas present for myself, heheh

        • I actually use men’s lip balm all the time. The girly stuff is often too mild and strawberry flavoured and I like my balm thick and minty!

(Laura/ Fiona: Know how you both hate mint but it’s my fave… do stay away from the Marc Jacobs lip lacquer – that is SO minty!)

I am frustrated by this type of difficult packaging too – drives me nuts.
I like Burt’s Bees but find it horribly overpriced in this country, as are most things!

          • I never knew there’s men lip balm! I prefer lip balm to be scentless. Oh I’m okay with minty lip balm. Just not minty lipstick or lip gloss.

  • I like the classic tin can packaging but can understand your frustration to wrestle to pry it open 🙂 Glad it turned out to be a worthy product. Applying lip balm before bedtime does help to keep lips supple and easier to exfoliate the next morning 🙂

    • I like the classic tin too. Maybe because I have had bad experience with the tube before so this is way better and more moisturizing than the tube. I do agree with you on applying lip balm before bed. I only wear matte lipstick nowadays so it’s crucial for me to have a smooth lip surface to pull the look 😀

  • Oh I never like the tin packaging, it totally turns me off no matter how good the product is.

    • Hehe I believe most people hated it. I’m okay as long as I don’t need to use it outside 😀
