One thing I hate about Facebook is that they are changing the way news feed appears on our timeline so frequently that I’m constantly missing new updates from the pages I’m following. Maybelline Malaysia has been teasing us with their new matte liquid lipstick and all that does not appear on my timeline. I only found out that Maybelline has a new Velvet Matte liquid lipstick when I was browsing through Guardian Malaysia Facebook page for their weekly promotions (love Guardian promo). Coincidently, it was the last day of Velvet Matte promo price of RM26.15 that I just had to drive to a Guardian to get it. Before that, I google for swatches online and concluded that I would get MAT 12 only as the rest of the colors are just too bright for everyday wear. For me that is 😀

Maybelline Velvet Matte by Color Sensational is a liquid-to-matte velvet finish liquid lipstick. What this means is, this is a lipstick in liquid form that would set to a velvet matte finishing. The concept is pretty similar to Anastasia Beverly Hills liquid lipstick which is like the queen of all liquid lipstick. I personally like matte lipstick, not so much of a liquid lipstick fan due to the hassle application but if it’s gonna set to a matte finishing, count me in!

It comes in a tiny purse-friendly little tube, which is the same packaging as Lip Polish except for the matte top. I like that I can see the liquid lipstick shade from the outside, and it is quite true to its color.

The applicator is a doe-foot type, kinda pointy, tear-drop shape, and if you look from the flat side of it, it is actually slightly curvy. I suppose the design is in such way so that the applicator would sit on the lips better. I like the short wand as it gives me a more precise application. The pointy tip helps to get into the corners so much better. However I wish the pointy side is not as bulky as it is. Perhaps more flatter Maybelline?? It feels like it has a ‘ball’ at the tip and I don’t quite get an even application despite being precise. I have the tendency to get a knife and chop it off!

Now, the scent. Thank goodness this Velvet Matte does not comes with any funky scent like the Bourjois Rouge Edition Velvet. I absolutely adore Rouge Edition Velvet but the scent? My God.

As I said earlier, the applicator gives me a precise application. That’s the main thing I like about Maybelline Velvet Matte. I only bought MAT 12 as I needed (another) everyday shade. What’s new haha. I have been on the lookout for an everyday nude brown shade and swatches online shows that MAT 12 is pretty similar. On camera, the shade came off as a pinkish nude but in real it’s actually a brownish nude. Either way I LOVE this shade.

Maybelline really shouldn’t name this as Velvet Matte as this is not quite a matte liquid lipstick. It does not set to matte at all. This product I say is quite tricky. If you apply a thin layer, the payoff is not opaque but it does set to semi-matte. But if you apply a thicker layer like I normally do, you will get an opaque coverage. Absolutely beautiful. The downside? It stays on your lips like that all the time and YOU WILL feel the product on your lips ALL THE TIME. What I don’t like about Velvet Matte liquid lipstick is also it’s inability to set to a velvet matte finishing like it claimed. It does feel velvety smooth due to the liquid lipstick texture but matte? Nah. Because the product DOES NOT set, it just sits on top of your lips so it will transfer to everything. And when it does, you will end up with patchy lips. Not the most glamorous moment when it does happen especially if you have dry, chapped lips like I do.

This is how Velvet Matte in MAT 12 looks like on me. I love the color. Love how it is on my lips. It gives me a natural tint of color, which will go so well with smokey eye do. The downside of shade like this is that it doesn’t appear on photos. I do looked a bit wash out, kinda like I wasn’t wearing any lipstick. But up near, it is beautiful 🙂

So, is this a bad lip product to get? No, not at all. It is actually a pretty decent liquid lipstick for the price tag and I would recommend it to everyone. You just have to bear in mind that this is not a completely matte lipstick, which can be a pros and cons for different individual. If you have dry, chappy lips like me, you would appreciate this velvety smooth liquid lipstick. I like that there wasn’t any rubbery texture which other matte liquid lipstick has. If you are into a completely matte liquid lipstick like the Anastasia Beverly Hills, then this may not be it. Unless you apply a very thin layer to get a more matte look. However, it is not kiss-proof ya 😀 . It does gets everywhere.
