Street Lovers! This is one meaningful charity event that I hope you will take a few hours off your Sunday and join me in this walk.
Aveda’s April 2013 Earth Month campaign will inspire its network of beauty professionals and consumers in more than 35 countries to raise $5 million for the protection of clean water — a basic human right that nearly 900 million people worldwide fight for daily.
Aveda Walk for Water is an international charity campaign driving public action towards providing clean water to communities in need. This year, the walk will take place at the Square, Publika Mall, Solaris Dutamas, Kuala Lumpur. The 2.5 km mass walk symbolises the distance individuals without clean water supply have to walk for fresh water. Through the walk, Aveda aims to generate awareness to the local water crisis faced by rural communities and islanders in Malaysia.
Why Walk?
Project H20 is a collaborative effort of EcoKnights and other NGOs on the island of Mantanani which intends to create a safe, sustainable drinking water supply for the Mantanani community members in the form of filtered, bottled water, including the determination of the groundwater aquifer quality, awareness and knowledge building of the value of water, water sampling and analysis, health checks and awareness about the link of villager’s health to the current quality of drinking water on the island.
Expected effects of the project
Globally, investment to improve drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene and water resource management systems makes strong economic sense: every dollar invested leads to up to eight dollars in benefits. (Water and sanitation targets under the Millennium Development Goals).
The main impacts of the Mantanani H2O project expected are:
- Safe drinking water for up to 1200 people, particular 310 children and students;
- Increase in health and prophylaxis of water borne diseases;
- Sustainable use of the fragile resource ground water to meet the increasing demand;
- Provide affordable and safe water in bottles for everybody;
- Create awareness about the value and importance of safe water for health;
- First time, systematically knowledge about water quality and resources available;
- Use of rainwater as a safe source included;
- Two community jobs created ensure an alternative livelihood.
Aveda Walk for Water will take place at the Square, Publika from 8am – 10am. We will do a 2.5 km mass walk that symbolizes half the distance individuals without clean water supply have to walk for fresh water. Through the walk, Aveda aims to generate awareness to the local water crisis faced by rural communities and islanders in Malaysia

(1) You can also support Aveda’s Walk for Water by purchasing a “Light the Way” candle at their stores in Pavillion and One Utama.
Light the Way comes in 95% post-consumer recycled (PCR) glass, and the outer carton is printed with soy ink on 100% recycled carton stock. Some of the stock was previously used by Aveda, and some is made with 55% post-consumer board. Each candle costs RM55, and proceeds from the sale will help raise funds for clean water efforts by local environmental organization, EcoKnights. The candle makes a nice gift, or a little pick-me-up for yourself.
Or, (2) you can donate a minimum of RM20 or more and take home a limited edition Aveda cap during the event day.
This is not about what you can bring home from the charity event or what you can get out of it. Instead join ME in this charity walk on 21st April. It would lend a big support on the serious need to address water issues from pollution to accessibility, to environmental protection among the participants.
Are you willing to spare 2-3 hours of your time for this charity walk?
