ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15: Something not meant for oily skin

Many many years ago I started off my journey into makeup by getting Korean and American brands by joining online sprees. My repeat order has always been Missha and ELF. ELF was my favourite because of the price. It is US$1 per item for the basic line, which is known as Essential line now. Most spree cost about RM6 per item, a bit high after conversation but hey, the seller got to earn a bit too for organizing the spree right? 🙂 . So I was more than happy to pay RM6 per ELF item.

One particular item that I ordered the most is ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15. I have no idea what Tinted Moisturizer is at that time. It looks like a foundation but I remember hating it very much because the coverage was so sheer that none of my acne marks were covered. Not even a tiny bit. I ended up giving away most of it to my friends, who I’m sure doesn’t know a clue what to do with it too lol.

While I was browsing for stuffs to order on iHerb, I stumbled upon this ELF Tinted Moisturizer again. So I started googling and I found out that this best-seller product is actually discontinued and was replaced with ELF Studio Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20. So I order one ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 #Apricot Beige from iHerb for USD$1.99. Initially I wanted to order three but since I can’t remember much about it, I only order one. Plus iHerb only have one shade. I suppose this is the leftover stock after the product was discontinued.

For a $1.99 product, it is not a very big tube. 12g to be exact. It’s probably as big as one and a half of my two fingers combined. Nothing fancy schmancy about the packing either. Just a normal clear tube with white cap. It’s quite the cheapo looking too 😀

The tube has a pointy tip dispenser. Quite convenient I would say. One thing scary about it is that once I pressed on, it just keep on dispensing none stop while rested on the table top. What you see on the tube is the true shade of the tinted moisturizer.

ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 came out just like any normal foundation. But once you spread it away, it’s almost like a cream or moisturizer. In another word, it’s very light coverage. Do not expect any coverage with this at all. As my tube is in Apricot Beige shade, the tinted is leaning more towards orangey shade. Gawd, I’m so worried that I’ll look like oompa loompa 😀

One thing that I can remember vividly about the ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 is the orange scent. It smells like orange chocolate bar to be exact. Not so much like the real fruit. The scent is absolutely yummylicious, not overpowering at all because the scent will go away once it’s on the face.

ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 4
ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 goes on my face in a very wet consistency. No wait. Let me correct myself. It goes on very oily on the face, probably too moisturizing on me. It does take a very long time to set. I say probably 15 minutes to 30 minutes to set but it doesn’t set completely. It’s still sitting on my face for the next half an hour. Initially I didn’t want to apply a setting powder over it. I just want some coverage and some glow but heck, this tinted moisturizer is so wet, so oily that I can feel it on my face all the time. I took out my ZA Skin Beauty Two-Way Foundation, ran my brush over it and lightly dust all over my face. You have no idea how relieved I felt at that time. I just don’t like oily and sticky feeling on my face.

This is how ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 on me, without any setting powder. Nope, it absolutely covers nothing. See the dark eye circles and the huge pimple on my chin?

I have to say, despite hating how the ELF Tinted Moisturizer SPF 15 feel and look on my face, I actually like it for what it is. It’s a pretty decent tinted moisturizer but would work better on normal or dry skin user. The coverage could be a teeny weeny bit more. Then it’s a great product! As for what it is now, you just have to work with the product and get the best out of it.

I went to nap with all the product on just to test the longevity and woke up with somewhat fuller base makeup on my face. It wasn’t like that at all when I set it with powder. I suppose my face starts to oil up a bit and blends with ZA Skin Beauty Two-Way Foundation therefore the coverage is somewhat higher.

For the price I pay (RM6.50), this is not that bad. So far this doesn’t give me any problem or breakout at all.

  • What else we can ask for at the price of RM 6.50 right? By the way, is it good in moisturizing your skin? (I assume it did because you said that it’s very wet and oily haha~~)

    • Yeap exactly. Something funny about ELF. There’s a few products from them that I don’t find work as it said but I like ELF very much. It is just so affordable. Too bad they don’t ship to Malaysia directly.
LOL yes, it’s good in moisturizing. I won’t recommend this for oily skin because it’s too oily.

          • Yes I think so! Since I have combination skin so I think it won’t be that oily on me 🙂

          • Correcto. It shouldn’t be too oily 😀

  • For RM6.50 it’s worth a try and despite being a walking oil well, I still infinitely prefer a more moisturising product that I can powder over to a drying product that causes me to look cakey and flaked.
I’m such a dimwit though because it took me quite a long time to work out that ELF stood for eye, lip, face and for the longest time I never even thought about this brand at all because I was turned off by the name. Too elfy?! 😛
Of course, now that I know, it completely makes sense lol

    • Oh that really depends on each individual skin condition I guess. I have super oily skin that can oils up within half an hour if I put on a product that doesn’t suits me. Which is why I never experience dry, flaky skin. No matter how dry or mattifying a product claimed to be, my face will still oil up LOL.
Hahaha you’re cute. I don’t pay too much attention to ELF as well simply because I cannot get it directly here. I think the name ELF (Eyes Lip Face) is brilliant!
