To be frank, I have never heard of AcroYoga before. I have only recently started a little bit of yoga as cross-training in between my runs but I sort of get the idea of what AcroYoga is based on the name. AcroYoga, as the name suggests is a combination of acrobatics and yoga. It sounds simple but once I saw photos on what it exactly is, I cannot breath.
ULTRON, one of the known sportswear brand here in Malaysia held a Facebook contest a few weeks ago for ULTRON YogaTron with Patrick and Ardiana Nolfo who are the latest ULTRON Athlete, who are also the Founders of The Acro Yoga Centre in Montreux, Switzerland. I was lucky enough to be invited personally by Joanne Kay, Founder & CEO of ULTRON to join the session. I nearly could not make it as none of my friends are into yoga whatmore AcroYoga. Just when I was about to turn down the offer, my friend Kelly from Sunshine Kelly said she is interested to go and be my partner!
YogaTron was held this morning at Signature by The Hill 1 First Avenue. The turnout was amazing. Looks like everyone are all hype up to do AcroYoga 😛 . Jenn of soimjenn was the host for the day. She too participated in the AcroYoga.
We all changed to ULTRON YogaTron top and our beverage aka light breakfast before the session was none other than LifeJuice. Mine was so good! 500 Days of Summer. Okay, must remember the name of this juice to repurchase 😉
How does AcroYoga feel now that I’ve done it?
I like that the session starts from warm up to simple pose before moving to slightly more difficult pose. That way we, the newbies are able to move along gradually. Before this I thought AcroYoga is a little bit intimate. I was wrong. You can do this with anyone at all, even with you guy friend or girl friend.
AcroYoga is all about balancing and team work. The only downside for me was I went for ULTRON 5F Running Movement with Metafit HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) the day before and I was sore all over especially both my legs. Don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love the running movement and Metafit HIIT session I went for, just that I was too sore to withstand some of the moves for this YogaTron 🙁 . For example the pose below I did with Kelly. It is actually a simple one. All we need to do is to move down using the support of each other and this old auntie’s leg was too sore to held on. This is the lowest I can go with the soreness lol. We are supposed to go down and up. Let’s just say I can go down but not up again 😛
AcroYoga is also all about the posture and using the right muscle. We tend to lean forward a lot to balance our body. In fact we should keep the body straight and use certain muscle as support and feel the stretch. The sore and pain means we are doing it right.
Here comes the difficult pose! I know my arms are too sore to be the one on the top and since Kelly is lighter, I told her to go on my back and I will support her with downward dog pose. She was afraid that she will break my back initially but after a while we got it, with the help of Angeline Ong.
This is where things get more challenging. Looking at Patrick and Ardiana doing it so beautifully and effortlessly, it seems easy enough. That was what we thought lol.
Kelly was not confident doing it, I certainly cannot do it due to the soreness of my legs so Ardiana came over and offered to do it with us. The person at the bottom must have enough strength to be able to support the person on the top and the person on top must know how to get on and “fly”. It was surprisingly quite easy. All I did was to hold onto Ardiana’s hand, I lean forward and before I knew it, I am already up in the air. But I was not fully stretch out yet so Ardiana told me to straighten my arms and lean up. Okay, I forgot to point my toes 😛
Everyone was helpful with each other at the event especially the coaches. If the coaches are not around, other participants are more than willing to help around. There are some poses which requires a third person to assist the person on top as afterall, we are not used to AcroYoga 🙂
The last pose that Kelly and I did was this one. Looks simple enough? That’s what we thought again!
We went over to the other two girls to help them with the pose, then they helped us back. It takes two person to assist LOL and my jelly legs was not able to support Kelly fully. Damn legs! I was thankful to have the two girls on the side. I certainly would not want to drop Kelly accidentally. That would not be good. Thank you girls!
Overall it was the best first AcroYoga experience. The session was quite easy actually provided you do not have sore arms and legs like me then it will be very easy to just follow and do. Thank you ULTRON for having me and Kelly at your YogaTron session with Patrick, Ardiana, and Angeline. We had lots of fun and laughter this morning 🙂
